The spoils are shared at Mestalla on Matchday 12
Valencia CF drew 1-1 with Real Betis at Mestalla on Matchday 12 of the LaLiga season, with Luis Rioja scoring the equaliser for Carlos Corberán's men in the second half.
The first real chance fell to the visitors, when Antony broke down his flank, reached the penalty area, and crossed to Abde, who fired wide of the post. Moments later, Valencia CF came very close to taking the lead themselves, when Javi Guerra spotted Arnaut Danjuma unmarked. After his pass, the Dutch winger cut inside the Betis penalty area and shot, but Alvaro Valles made the save..
Valencia CF took control of the game and created several chances. Danjuma came close again with a great left-footed shot from outside the box that struck the crossbar. Energetic pressing and effective pressure after losing possession were seemingly paying dividends to Valencia CF, but they were not putting away their opportunities: Danjuma passed to Lucas Beltrán at the near post, and the Argentine striker connected with the ball, but his shot hit the side netting..
Despite Valencia CF's dominance, Real Betis had their moments. In the 30th minute, Cucho Hernández passed to an unmarked Antony inside the penalty area, but the Brazilian sent his effort over the crossbar.
At the other end, a double chance came when José Luís Gayà crossed from the left wing, Lucas Beltrán headed the ball, and it fell to Diego López, whose hit was saved by Valles.
After the halftime break, Valencia CF came out with the same intensity and energy as in the first half, creating several moments of inspiration in the Real Betis penalty area. On one of these occasions, Lucas Beltrán pounced on a loose ball, but missed the target.
In the 70th minute, Hugo Duro and Luis Rioja were brought off the bench, and Valencia CF continued to dominate possession. However, Betis threatened Julen Agirrezabala's goal with a shot from Antony after a counter-attack.
Unfortunately for Valencia CF, it was Betis whose luck improved, and a one-on-one opportunity for Cucho Hernández was taken by the forward to make it 0-1.
Corberán made a triple substitution, bringing on Dani Raba, Jesús Vázquez, and Baptiste Santamaría to try and mount a comeback. From a corner, the equaliser arrived: Luis Rioja pounced on a rebound and fired a shot past Valles, to put the score at 1-1.
In the final moments of the game, Raba came close to getting the team a second from a free kick. Agirrezabala then made a crucial save to deny Real Betis a goal after a shot from Cucho Hernández in the box. Valencia CF fought until the final whistle, but couldn't find the reward of a second goal, and the match ended in a stalemate.
Valencia CF return to action at Mestalla against Levante UD on Friday, November 21st.
